The workplace has inevitably become your second home, as this is where you spend most of your time next to the house where you live. Because of this, you would want to ensure that it is fully equipped with fire safety equipment that will protect not only you but also the people you work with. If you are the employer, you should know that it is mandated by the UK law to install high quality fire safety devices in your workplace. If you are an employee, be sure to bring up this matter to the knowledge of your superiors. Here is a list of the top three fire safety equipment that a workplace should have.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are some of the most efficient firefighting tools that can combat and control flames before they grow big and become out of control. They are handy, effective, and easy to use. Your workplace would be safer if you have the right type of fire extinguisher installed. Take note of the words, “right type” as fire extinguisher come in various types and using the wrong extinguisher can produce disastrous consequences. Most offices are equipped with a water fire extinguisher, which is ideal for fires caused by paper, cloth, and wood, and a CO2 extinguisher, which is the only one safe and effective to use for electrical fires.

Fire Hose

A fire hose is also an essential tool that provides a steady flow of pressurised water that can effectively tackle a fire even if it has grown big. This tool is used mostly by firefighters but can also be utilised by employees that have undergone sufficient training on the use of this device. A fire hose is kept inside a cabinet and can be pulled to the location of the fire. This can provide utmost protection for the employees.

Smoke Detector/Fire Alarm

Smoke detectors and fire alarms are crucial because they alert people about the fire accident. This can help in early emergency response and immediate evacuation and thus, minimize danger, injuries, and damage. Some devices are a combination of an alarm and a detector. It is advisable to install at least one in every level of the workplace to ensure safety. Employers should also see to it that fire wardens check this device regularly to see if it is working. 1. I remember back in high school, we were in a middle of our class and my classmate saw a huge dark cloud near our classroom window and then all my other classmates started to panic. apparently a car broke down inside the school campus parking lot and suddenly caught fire. Miraculously the guards and janitors has an emergency fire extinguisher nearby so they hurriedly put off the fire and all the students were safe. The moral of my story is that even if the whole building has fire alarms and smoke detectors, you can never tell when and where a fire will start. Let us all be vigilant to our surroundings and always be prepared.
